Torey spent 17 years in the Army before transitioning to civilian life, and like many veterans, I’ve had to figure out who I am beyond the uniform. These days, I split my time between working as a Supply Technician with the Department of Defense in Germany and serving as CFO for a nonprofit called Mastery of Self that I care deeply about.

The organization focuses on helping veterans develop soft skills and build new identities after military service. Having gone through that transition myself, I understand how isolating it can feel when your military identity is such a huge part of who you are. We work to help veterans connect with others and find their footing in civilian life.

My professional background has been pretty varied – I’ve worked in logistics, procurement, and talent acquisition. I spent a few years with the VA managing contracts, and before that, I was recruiting for Goodwill across their Kansas City area locations. What I’ve learned throughout these roles is that whether you’re matching people to jobs or managing supply chains, it’s really about understanding needs and finding solutions that work for everyone involved.

I’m based in Kansas City when I’m not overseas, and I genuinely enjoy the problem-solving aspect of my work. I have a degree in Human Resources Management from Park University and some certifications in recruiting and process improvement, but honestly, most of what I know comes from experience and learning from the people I work with.

The quote that resonates with me is simple: “good leadership means inspiring others to dream more and do more.”
